![]() When the Knights of Columbus was founded, many Americans looked with suspicion upon Catholicism but held the Catholic explorer Christopher Columbus in high regard. Blessed Michael McGivney and the first Knights chose Columbus as a namesake because he served as an important symbol of courage, unity and hope among American Catholics, particularly Catholic immigrants.
